Individuals who endured sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the pontiff's choice to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Worldwide Strict Policy Advocated

The organization is pushing for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a child. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we acknowledged that there is pushback," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who took the position in May, has inherited this persistent problem that has plagued the Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The North American activist revealed they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we want to work with him," Hickey stated. "Both sides share the same goal, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple representatives of the organization, which includes victims and advocates from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for a brief period, lasted to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "quite empathetic" when listening to the account of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal story and seemed "very humble, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Victims have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I believed like he was genuine, practical, and very open and keen to collaborate with us."

Church Regulations Changes

The organization is advocating that revisions to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the strict approach globally.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered materials that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," they noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recent church-ordered report highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The document also noted that survivors repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they informed the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they expressed hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the conclusion, uniting and building a relationship and continuing to build that bond is a step in the correct path," Hickey commented.

They concluded that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
