Our Premier Release of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Premier Spot.

At first glance, this work could seem more like an arduous scholarly examination than a new popular music project by a musician who just had a last single featured an international K-pop icon. Split across four different sections and voiced in thirteen tongues, we have a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into feminine mystique, religious ascent, and bodily change, frequently through the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, carried by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among an extensive list of contributors. The pure audacity alone makes the work of contemporary artists appear rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to transcend overly academic chin-stroking is nearly miraculous, with full praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not the first time project to blend historical sounds and modern styles, its scale are far higher on Lux, and the balancing act more dramatic. What truly raises her fourth album, outside of its complex tunes, rich arrangements, and inherent drama, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the iconic artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener up in its tornado. When she's breaking your heart apart, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there through the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This playful spirit comes forth clearly on a stunning Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool over more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes down with comedic force. The track then shifts into the wild track featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor want to predict—where you is going to next."

Nearly every track ends in a totally distinct place than where it started. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before collapsing into electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing her earlier trap-infused work begins off moody and sinister, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album involves straddling the line of bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her highest-charting work to crack the Top 5 of major charts: at its core a suite of truly catchy hits. One track sung primarily in English swells around a chorus that feels to collect increasingly nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. This feat gets echoed on a different expansive ballad that grows and constricts, weaving multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces with its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary heartbreak anthems, lambasting a former lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a motherfucker / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

This album represents pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for high artistry in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is an abundant source of hidden gems that requires patience to fully mine but never feels like a chore. While some big releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record offers a sumptuous banquet where the characters at it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flit between conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
